File Extension Amr

Compressed audio files used by most 3G mobile phones carry the .amr file extension. This format developed by Ericsson, can either be narrow band (AMR-NB) or wide band (AMR-NB); the most common is the narrow band. AMR refers to Adaptive MultiRate, a technology which allows the compression rate to be reduced if signal interference increases. The reduced compression results in better error correction performance. The Adaptive MultiRate codec was adopted as the standard speech codec by the 3d Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in 1998, and later by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in 1999 and 2006, making it supported almost universally by any mobile communications device.

The .amr file structure consists of a header of 6 bytes identifying the file as an AMR, followed by the audio data which has been broken up into a specific number of frames. The information in the header is universal and consistent among all .amr files. If the header differs from the standard, the file is most likely corrupt and should not be opened. Each of the frames contains 20ms of audio data which can be encoded at different bit rates, thus distinguishing the file as MultiRate. Each frame also has its own single byte header followed by the raw audio data. AMR technology uses the ACELP (Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction) algorithm, specifically designed for compression of the human voice.

More Info Regarding File Extension Amr

AMR as applied to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services allows for extremely high QoS (Quality of Service) results due to the utilization of 8 different bit rates. This flexibility makes it possible for mobile device manufacturers to tailor their software to the conditions and needs of a given market. The technology has proven to be extremely reliable and robust even across multiple languages (US and UK English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese).

Apple's Quicktime Player and RealNetworks' RealPlayer can both open these files for listening. Users who wish to edit must convert to another format supported by their editing software. Mobile Media Converter is a free conversion program for Windows and Linux, that handles both audio and video conversion using ffmpeg. The program supports many of the common formats like .mp3, .ogg, .wma, .wav, .mpeg, and .3g2. Allok MP3 to AMR Converter, Mobile Ringtone Converter, Mobile AMR converter, FLAC MP3 Converter, and EZ Ringtone are other programs available conversion of .amr files.
Conversion tools are popular among those wishing to customize their cell phones, as they allow users to convert their favorite music or other sound files for use as ringtones. Users should find a conversion tool that works in both directions for this purpose.

Errors related to .amr files are limited due to the nature of the data involved, but they do occur. The most common among them are codec errors when trying to open the files on a computer. While Quicktime and RealPlayer have the AMR codec installed by default, it is not uncommon for these codecs to be damaged or inadvertently removed from a system. Codec errors can be corrected by simply downloading and installing the proper codecs. Some conversion programs also require the AMR codec to be installed on the computer before conversion can take place.

Other errors may occur if the file header does not match the standard header that all .amr files carry. This bad header could be the result of a faulty transmission, an error while using a conversion tool, or just bad coding by a developer. In any case, bad headers do not pose any serious threat to a computer's operating system or crucial data, nor will they render a mobile device inoperable. Users can expect that these files will not be usable on the mobile device and should be replaced, and on the computer they can result in a crash of Quicktime or RealPlayer.
